Purpose of the Project
The purpose of the Carter DNA project is to compliment genealogy research by confirming or disproving family lines through DNA testing. The DNA markers tested in this project are limited to 12, 25, 37 or 67 specific markers on the Y chromosome that are passed from father to son only. If you are a female interested in joining this project please try to enlist the participation of your father, brother, uncle or male cousin who is a Carter.

History of the Project

This surname project was started on October 15, 2003. We now have over 200 participants, including many who have joined as the result of the Genographic Project. We received our first test results December 10, 2003. Currently, we have identified many separate branches of Carters. With DNA testing, Group 1, Haplogroup I, has been able to prove a family relationship between John and Levi Carter, who were both in NJ in the early 1700's. Until the testing of DNA of descendents of both men, it was just a theory. Now they have thousands of new cousins and can work together to fill in their family trees.

How it's Done

Family Tree DNA is the testing company being used for this project. Most of your questions concerning DNA testing for genealogy purposes can be answered at that site or by contacting me. If you have been tested by another company you can still join the project. Just send the results of your test to me, along with your family information.

If you are interested in joining our group please go the Carter Surname Project to register and order your kit. Please be prepared to submit a geneology report starting with your earliest known Carter ancestor. Without geneological research, DNA test results have little relevance. But don't let this requirement keep you from being tested. Several of us are new to genealogy and haven't found an ancestor earlier than 1900. The report does not have to be generated with special software. A simple narrative will do. This project is not limited to Carters in North America; all Carters are invited to join. The more Carters that participate the better everyone's chance will be to make a match or break down that brick wall.

Disclaimer
I have no financial interest in this project nor do I have any association with www.familytreedna.com. I am only interested, like others in this group, in furthering my genealogical research.
