Notes for GEORGE CARTER, SR., R.S.:

VOLUME III - PIONEERS OF WIREGRASS GEORGIA, Page 40

George Carter, the ancestor of several thousand Wiregrass Georgians, was born probably in South Carolina. No dates are obtainable for his birth and death. Neither can the maiden name of his wife be learned. That he was born about 1740 is to be inferred from the fact that he served in the Cherokee Expedition in 1759-1760 in South Carolina; and he was living in 1820 in Appling County when he participated in the Georgia Land Lottery of that year. The ten known children of George Carter were named by Hon. H. D. O'Quin (1815-1900) who personally knew them.

George Carter was a Revolutionary soldier in South Carolina but the details of his service have not been learned. His home was in Colleton County, St. Bartholomew's Parish. At or near Carter's Ford on the Little Saltehatchee River. He was the third son of Jacob Carter; the latter had a family of six sons and four daughters all of whom lived in the vicinity of Carter's Ford except the oldest. Jesse Carter, who in 1790, was living in Georgetown District.

About 1808, George Carter and his brothers, Jesse and David and also cousins Jacob, William and James Carter and others of the family connection, moved to Tattnall County and settled mostly on or near the Ohoopee River where George Carter bought 575 acres January 17, 1809, from Samuel Parrish, and another adjoining tract of 575 acres from Phillip Griner of Screven County on October 25, 1809. Two years later, he acquired another tract when on November 2, 18l1 , 1000 acres was surveyed for him and soon after was granted him by the State; this land laid on the Ohoopee also. That he was a man of some affluence is to be inferred by these large land-holdings.

In 1819, when Appling County which laid across the Altamaha River from Tattnall County then as now, was opened to settlers, most of the sons of George Carter moved into the new county and settled there. In 1820, he was living in Tattnall in the 1820 census but appears listed as a resident of Appling in the Land Lottery of that year, being listed as George Carter, SR . These circumstances indicate he moved to Appling that year (1820). His death occurred there about two years later, age about 80 years.

Record is found in the deed records at Charleston, SC of deed of gift dated April 7, 1787, from Jacob Carter to his son, George Carter, for a tract of 50 acres on Little Swamp on the east side of Little Saltehatchee, which had previously been granted the elder Carter (Deed Book Y-5, page 35). Both father and son were identified in the deed as residents of St. Bartholomew's Parish, Colleton County. The 1790 Census showed Jacob Carter and his wife to be living alone and George Carter's family consisted of self and wife and seven boys under 16, and two girls.

VOLUME V - ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS OF PIONEERS OF WIREGRASS GEORGIA:

He served as a private in the 3rd South Carolina Regiment, Continental Line, from July 5, 1779, to July 1, 1781, a total of 28 months 26 days or nearly 2 and one half years, and was paid for his service by the War Department, July 8, 1794. He also served two or three other short terms of enlistment.

Mrs. Florrie Register Chilton of Edgewater, FL, was the first descendant of George Carter, R.S. to become a member of the DAR on the record of his service in the Revolutionary War. Her supplemental application was accepted Sept 1962. Her D.A.R. National Number is 886680. She descends through the daughter, Sarah, wife of Isaac Moody.

The son, David Carter, married Rachel Cooper, daughter of Frederick Cooper of Tattnall County, instead of Miss Baggs.

Notes for R.S. LITTLEBERRY WALKER, SR.:

Information provided by "Jay" through Wiregrass-L @Rootsweb.com

Buried in SMART CEMETERY, COLUMBIA CO., FL

LITTLEBERRY WALKER, son of Isham Walker and his wife, Mary was born 1767 in South Carolina. He came with his parents from South Carolina to Georgia during the Revolution. Littleberry stated in a declaration to obtain a pension for Revolutionary Service, that he served in 1783 as a private in Captain William West's Company of Militia, and that he was drafted into service in Liberty County, Georgia. He stated that he had no documentary proof of his service and he knew of no one whose testimony he could procure in support of his claim. His claim was rejected for want of proof. His line has been accepted with the DAR as a Revolutionary Soldier. Littleberry lived in Glynn County at the time of the 1805 Georgia Land lottery ,in which he was a registrant. By 1807 he had moved to Camden County and by the 1820s is found in Wayne County. On February 7, 1824 Littleberry Walker and Elizabeth Walker were received by letter in the High Bluff Church. Elizabeth died about 1835. A list of voters at Shadrach Sapp's Precinct, Alligator, Columbia County Florida on Oct. 13, 1835 shows Littleberry Walker as a voter. Littleberry Walker was dismissed by letter Dec. 14, 1837 from High Bluff Church and moved his membership to Florida. He moved to Columbia County along with several of his sons, Elias, Ansel, David, Andrew, and Westberry. He made his home with his son, Westberry. His son, Jeremiah was living in Columbia County by 1856. Evidently Littleberry died in Columbia County after 1850 when he made the above declaration for a pension.

Bacon County: Pioneers

"come sit a spell, and visit with us."

Since Bacon County was formed out of several other counties, we must look to what once were Appling County residents who settled in the land now called Bacon for it's earliest residents. These men settled where they felt that they could survive, and prosper, and raise their families irregardless of the boundaries being drawn around them.

Isaac Carter was born in South Carolina in 1790, a son of a Revolutionary soldier. He married Ellender there and moved to Georgia and settled on Ten Mile Creek. They bore 12 children who married: Williams, Bennett, Corbit, Walden, Harrison, Henderson, Boatright, and Hiers. He died in 1854, and is buried at Ten Mile Creek Church Cemetery in an unmarked grave. (Note: The grave is now marked.)
