Additional Factual Information
Allen Carter’s mother was named Susan and listed in his household in 1850 Census.
Susan was born between 1787 and 1792. In the 1850 census, she is reported as 60 years old, (b1790), and on
death certificate July 27, 1852 she is also reported as 60 years of age and born in Virginia to John B. and
Elizabeth Carter. John lived in neighboring county of Woodford. He was from Powhatan, Va. He and Elizabeth
Mosby Carter had 10 children.
The balance of the story depends on which researcher one thinks is correct. Dick Zieman of the Carter
Society shows Jon B. as a descendent of Capt. Thomas Carter (1630 1700). Henry Skipwith Carter (1676-1743),
Robert Carter (1725-1797) to John B. (1758-1839). Some other researchers show a linage going to Giles Carter.
Speculation
I strongly feel that Susan Carter was married to an Allin Carter b 1795 in Kentucky.
I think he had an older brother James, b 1792 in Virginia. Both were children of Charles Carter and unknown wife. They arrived Madison County, Ky. and were listed on 1800 Tax List. Charles has died by about 1804. James was placed into apprenticeship 13/Feb/1804. (Fayette County Deed Book A, Section 1 page 288.) James was 11 years old 30th of September 1803.(when Charles made apprenticeship arrangement)
In the 1810 census Allin is head of a household, at 16 years of age, one female less than 10 (sister),
and one female of 25 but less than 45 ( his mother). James is committed to apprenticeship until age 21, or
about 1813. Indiana sometime after 1820 but before 1826.(See Alexander birth date and location) However,
cannot be found in 1830 Indiana 1820 census Allin is married with two males less 10, a female of 25.
The census listing next to Allin is James Carter, a wife, and two male children. I feel this reforces the
idea of being brothers. Allin moved his family to census. The only indication is that Allen’s (1817) brothers, Logan b 1819 in Ky. and Alexander b 1826 in Indiana. There is no record of this family in Kentucky until 1840 census. They have returned to Fayette Co. Ky late 1830’s. I think Allin deserted his family some time after 1826. There is no record of Allin until 1880, and he is living in Fayette Co. Ky on a farm in the South Elkhorn River area. He is 85 years old. He indicates both mother and father were born in Virginia.
I have included these details out of desperation and hope of solving this mystery. drc
