Descendants of Thomas James Carter
Generation
No. 1
1. THOMAS JAMES1 CARTER was born 25 Mar 1785 in
North Carolina, and died Bet. 1851 - 1859 in Clarke Co., Mississippi. He married ELIZABETH MOSELEY 24 Mar 1806 in
probably South Carolina. She was born
25 Jan 1787 in South Carolina, and died 07 Nov 1856 in Clarke Co., Mississippi.
Notes
for THOMAS JAMES CARTER:
(A
family Bible record gives the birthplace of Thomas James Carter as born in
North Carolina and Elizabeth Moseley as born in South Carolina. This is collaborated by the 1850
Census. The father of Thomas James
Carter is currently unknown. He should
show up on the 1790 NC or SC Census since Thomas James Carter was born March
25, 1785 in North Carolina. Need more
information to narrow it down. In the 1850 Mississippi Census, Clarke Co. where
Thomas James Carter was living, a Martha Carter, age 92 died of "Old
Age" in April 1850. She was born
in NC. She's a possibility as the
mother of Thomas James Carter. A
"George Carter", age 50-59 was living near Thomas James Carter in
Lauderdale Co, Miss. in the 1840 Census.
He may be a brother to Thomas James Carter.)

Emails
from Robert Carter (Ricarplace@aol.com):
"In Meridian and Jackson we also found some minutes for Buckatunny
Baptist Church, located in Clarke County (the spelling now changed to
Buckatunna, the name of a major creek nearby) and discovered that Thomas James,
wife, Elizabeth, sister Sarah Carter and two other Carter's joined the church
in Jan. 1842 by letter. Those two were
Rebecca S. Carter and Elijah M. Carter, perhaps two children of Thomas
James. It should be noted that Ebenezer
Church at Causeyville and Buckatunny Church over the line in Clarke County were
only a matter of 6 or so miles apart (which we didn't know at the time of the
trip).
Erasmus
L. Carter and wife, Margaret L., were charter members of Ebenezer Baptist
Church. Benjamin M. Carter and wife
were also named as members of Buckatunny Baptist Church. An estate record for the father-in-law of
Thomas K. Carter made reference to several of these Carter's. There was a reference elsewhere from Mont
Rose Baptist Church records that Thomas K. first joined a Salem Baptist Church
in Lauderdale County."
"I
feel quite comfortable with Benjamin M. and James B. (being sons of Thomas
James Carter) because of being named "Uncles" by William John Carter
in a letter to his son."
"We
know that Elijah Milburn moved to Texas.
Somewhere there is a note that he had a brother that also moved to
Texas. From the notation in William
John's letter of "Uncle B. M.", I believe Benjamin M. did go to
Texas. There is some indication that
James B. moved from Ouachita (Nevada) County to another county in Arkansas, but
I don't know for sure or where. "

Churches have been mapped on the Internet.
Note 1:
Churches held "conference" on the Saturday of a two day preaching
weekend by the itinerant pastor. I grew
up in Arkansas with that kind of arrangement at Emmaus Baptist Church. Conference was "left open" in
order to include new members received on Sunday, etc. As the abstract editor of one set of "minutes"
indicated, sometimes these "extras" inadvertently did not get
recorded in the minutes, though added to the church roll.
William
John wrote, in 1885, to his son, Benjamin John, who was living in Texas, and
asked him to give his regards to "your Uncle B. M. and Aunt Jane" who
must evidently have also been in Texas.
I have found a B.M. Carter and wife Jane in the 1880 census in Navarro
County, Texas. That is two counties
east of Hood County where Benjamin John was living. That B. M. Carter was age 66, which would put his birth year at
1814. It would fit with the 1840
Lauderdale Co. MS census. It would also
mean that the two children missing from Thomas James' listing that year (1840)
were William John and Benjamin M. who
had their own households. That would
leave Erasmus L. as perhaps a nephew, not a son. It would also leave the door open for Thomas Kervin to be the one
son born between 1815-1820. This of
course does not reconcile the age difference of Benjamin (and Nancy) in 1850 in
Clarke Co. MS. [Perhaps the census
taker there was bad at math since we seem to have several problems with ages
that year in that location.]
Note 2:
So where did Benjamin M. and Nancy Jane go from 1850 to 1880? If he was a son
of Thomas James and Elizabeth, wonder if his middle name was Moseley. Recall Andrew Moseley Carter, the son of
Benjamin J.T.
Note 3:
The William P. Carter that shows up in Lauderdale Co. Census was a well known
preacher. He first came to Lauderdale
Co. from Smith Co. MS and was pastor of several Baptist Churches, most notably
Oakey Valley Baptist Church at Bonita (now Meridian suburb), the forerunner of
First Baptist Church, Meridian. There
is no indication of any relationship to our Carter's, except in church settings.
"
Notes
for NANCY JANE MEADOR:
Referred
to in Will of John Meador in Dallas Co., AL as "Jincey". (Maybe misread from "Nancy"?)
>From
Robert Carter (Ricarplace@aol.com) on July 3, 2004:
"The
wife of B. M. Carter (Benjamin M.), is given in a large book on Carter's in the
Mississippi State Archives, as Nancy Jane Meador, youngest sister of Rebecca
Meador Carter and Andrew Jackson Meador.
In the Salem Baptist Church minutes she is referred to as Jane
Carter. B.M. and Jane were granted
letters of dismission in October 1841.
In Buckatunny Baptist Church he is usually referred to as B.M. but in
one instance as Benjamin M. In a letter
in 1883 from William John Carter to one of his sons, reference is made to your
Uncle B. M. and Aunt Jane. The name
"Jency" (Jincy) or "Pency" seems to come from a misreading
somewhere of "Nancy" that then shows up in the Meador book by Ellone
Moore McBride. If the above is correct,
she would be an Aunt of Sarah Suzanne Meador, Benjamin John Thomas Carter's
wife. "
