(Horace Edwin Hayden, Virginia Genealogies, [Wilkes-Barre, PA, 1891], .225). Clifford Dowdey, The Virginia Dynasties, [Boston: Little, Brown, n.d.], p.18). (One ref. states he was b. Garston, Hertford, England). Virginia Lineages, Letters & Memories, by Alice Nelson, 1984;p.194) Anne: Her father was of Ratcliffe Highway, St. Dunstans, Stepney, England. Sarah: The Colonial Genealogist, vol.8, no.2 [Apr 1976],pp.65-66: by Dom W. Wilfrid Bayne, O.S.B., of Portsmouth Priory, RI). (A History of the Carter Family, Copyright 1972 by Amer. Gen. Research Inst., Wash., DC).

John first settled in Upper Norfolk, now Nansemond County, and later Lancaster Co., VA. Both himself and his eldest son, John appear on the vestry book as members of the vestry in the year 1666, the father having been acting in that capacity before – how long not known. The father, who died in 1669, had previously built by contract, the first church standing on the spot where Christ Church now is, and the vestry received it at the hands of his son John, in six months after the father’s death. John Carter, Sr., was buried with his 5 wives, near the chancel, in the church which he built, and the tombstone covers all of them, being still in the same position in the present church. [Old Churches, Families, II, 110, et seq.]. The epitaph from his stone, which lies on the right hand of the chancel, reads: Here lyeth buried ye body of John Carter, Esq., who died ye 10th of June, Anno Domini 1669; and also Jane, ye daughter of Mr. Morgan Glyn, and George her son, and Elenor Carter, and Ann, ye daughter of Mr. Cleave Carter, and Sarah, ye daughter of Mr. Gabriel Ludlow, and Sarah her daughter, which were all his wives successively, and died before him.

John Carter is the original Carter in what I have called "GCR's Carter Genealogy." This is an extensive bare bones typed genealogy of a Carter family prominent in the history of VA and elsewhere found in the papers of Gabriel Brooke Church, 1912-1979, who, married to a Roesler and later a Randolph, used the initials "GCR."

The genealogy, about 120 typed pp. long, consists of names, scattered dates, and some titles. It does contain information about the presence or absence of known issue for almost all the people in it. It is gradually being incorporated into this genealogy with additions and corrections gleaned from other sources, many of them the generous world wide web postings of other genealogists.

There is a reference in the typed document to an obscurity in the manuscript. This suggests that the document typed by GCR was derived from an original handwritten manuscript prepared by someone else. The use of pet names and middle names as first names for many of the people named in the

genealogy suggests that the preparer or preparers were people on familiar terms with the Carter family.

My suspicions lean toward Carter and Gussie Conrad (the misses Carter Bryan Conrad and Augusta Forman Conrad) socially active spinsters from Winchester, VA, and Washington, D.C. I believe they couldn't type, I know they were deeply immersed in family history and widely connected. They may have been aided and abetted by their second cousin, John Stewart Bryan. Publisher of the Richmond News Leader, later president of the College of Willliam and Mary and sometime president of the Virginia Historical Society. Bryan, however, was not directly descended from John Carter.

If I knew who prepared the handwritten manuscript that I suppose GCR was working from, I would credit that person or persons as author of the genealogy and GCR only as an editor. GCR introduced some comments into the genealogy as she was typing it, and penned or penciled in some additions and comments to it later. She was a doctoral candidate in history at Bryn Mawr College in the mid-1940's, specializing in American history during the Revolutionary War period. Her notations have been included as I have gradually incorporated "GCR's Carter Genealogy" into this genealogy.

I have striven (imperfectly) to indicate the sources of all information that I have put into this genealogy. My spouse, who has had to work under greater time constraints, has put more energy into documentation from public records, less into citation of website and other secondary sources; this has affected documentation of the information that she has entered.

Max Roesler, 6 May 2002

Notes for SARAH LUDLOW:

One of the most noted Carter family's was COL John Carter of "Corotoman" who had son Robert "King" Carter, America's first millionaire and the wealthiest man in Virginia when he lived. Among his direct descendants are a number of presidents, and more than one military leader, including Gen. Robert E. Lee, whose mother was Anne Carter, Roberts direct descendant. Many genealogies have been written on this family. However, many argue the CPT Thomas Carter family of Barford Plantation actually attained greater social and cultural prestige due to their royal lineage and early Virginia heritage. They also brought a great amount of wealth and political power in their own right. CPT Thomas Carter, of Barford Plantation, on the Corotoman River, Lancaster County, lived just a few miles from COL John Carter. His offspring produced Supreme Court justices, governors, U.S. Senators, colonial vestrymen, militia officers, famous journalists and authors, U.S. Attorneys General, legislators, colonial sheriffs, U.S. congressmen, corporate giants, and U.S. Army generals and Naval admirals.

Notes for ELIZABETH SHIRLEY:

Elizabeth was a widow from Gloucester county. She and John were NOT at all happy together. John left his wife Elizabeth 8 months pregnant at the time of his death. She was to have 500 pounds,(which was part of the marriage contract), a negro boy, "her" necklace of diamond and pearls, and "her own books"and share with Carter's sons John and Robert in the residual personal estate.

Assuming that her child would be a boy, "whose name is intended Charles" and never referring to this future Carter except as "her son"he provided for his heir as meagerly as decency would permit. His executors were to allow the widow 12 pounds a year for his [Charles'] education and [my] son John is to allow my wife's son necessary clothes". Such was his indifference to the estate of the boy who would bear his own name that he provided for the contingency of the widow putting "her son out to apprentice". The widow's child was a boy whom she dutifully named Charles after which he disappeared from the records. He was presumably still alive at 21, for John Carter II made a provision for him in his will- - 1/3 of the personal estate- though nothing indicated that he claimed his share. She was born 17 May 1683 in Herefordshire, England, and died 03 Jul 1719 in Lancaster Co., VA35,36.

Notes for COL. ROBERT CARTER:

Son of John Carter & Sarah Ludlow, Col. Robert Carter was ³of Carotoman² VA, he was nicknamed ³King Carter² because of his prominence and vast possessions in the colony. He was sent to ENG for 6 years to complete his education and had many friends and business acquaintances there. He later became Agent for Lord Fairfax, Proprietor of the Northern Neck of VA which encompassed all that land lying between the Potomac and Rappahannock river

He was a Member of the House of Burgesses for Lancaster Co, VA in 1691/2 and 1695/99 (³Bio. Directory of American Colonial & Rev. Governors 1607-1789² by John W. Raimo, p. 489) and served as Speaker of the House of Burgesses in 1696 and 1699. He was Member of the Council 1699/1732 and was appointed President of the Council in 1726. He was elected Treasurer of the VA Colony in 1699 and 1704/32, Acting Gov. of VA Colony 1726/7 (Raimo, p. 489). ³

From his wealth and authority in the Colony, he became known as King Carter² (see Glenn¹s ³Some Colonial Mansions², p. 182). ³Eventually, Robert Carter became the wealthiest and perhaps the most influential man of his day in VA. He was capable, dominating and assertive. He possessed a genius for acquisition, a mind fruitful in ideas and the force and ability to carry his ideas into execution (Morton, p. 9). While successful and shrewd in his business dealings, he acted as Rector and Visitor of the College of William and Mary and in 1729 was made a trustee of the college (Morton, p. 20).

The historic Christ Church, possibly the finest colonial church in VA, was built in Lancaster Co, VA by Robert Carter at his expense. He and his two wives are buried there, as is his father, John Carter and four of his father¹s five wives.

He m1 1688 to Judith Armistead (b. 1665 Gloucester Co, VA, d. 23 Feb 1598/99 Lancaster, Lancaster Co, VA), the dau. of Col. John Armistead & Judith Robinson of Hesse in Gloucester Co, VA. He m2 1701 Elizabeth ³Betty² Landon Willis (d. 23 Jul 1719), dau. of Thomas Landon, Esq. of Credenhill, Co. Hereford, ENG & his wife Mary St. Leger; widow of Richard Willis (Carlton, p2).

Among the descendants of Robert Carter are more than 8 Governors of VA, three signers of the Declaration of Independence, two Presidents of the US (Benj. and Wm. Henry Harrison), Bishop of the Episcopal Church (Wm. Meade), Gen. Robert E. Lee, and Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court (Edward D. White)(from inscription on the foundation of Historic Christ Church in Irvington, VA).

When Gov. Alexander Spotswood concluded a treaty with the Indians of the ³Long House² whereby the Indians agreed not to invade the lands east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, vast lands were opened for settlement. In 1722 Col. Robert Carter, acting as the agent for Lady Catherine Fairfax, patented more than 90,000 acres in present day Fauquier, Prince William and Fairfax counties. However, much of this land was patented in the names of his sons, grandsons and other relatives, some of which were small children. His 14 year old son Landon Carter of Sabine Hall was deeded the Pittsylvania Tract and a part of the Bull Run tract. The lands in Prince William Co were described as Kettle Run (6166 acres), Bull Run (41,660 acres), Middle Bull Run (2823 acres), and Lower Bull Run (6730 acres).

In 1730 Col. Robert Carter obtained a grant of 63,000 acres of land from Gov. Gooch that ran from just below the forks of the Shenandoah along that river for about 20 miles. However, for many years, no settlers lived upon the land, rather it was tended to by overseers and slaves of the Colonel, who was already a rich man with many other properties (³History of the Lower Shenandoah Valley, Counties of Frederick, Berkeley, Jefferson & Clarke², ed. by Norris, 1890).

Homes of Carters or their descendants in the area were Portici, Pittsylvania, Hazel Plain, Mountain View, Elmwood, Sudley and Woodland. Those still standing are Liberia, Ben Lomond and Red Hill. Robert ³King² Carter was described as ³one of the greatest freeholders in the Northern Neck² and when he died in 1732, his obituary stated that he left 300,000 acres of land, 1000 slaves, and £10,000 in money (³Landmarks of Old Prince William: A Study of Origins in Northern A² by Fairfax Harrison, 1964, p. 197).

In his will, ³King² Carter names 10 of his children, five others died in infancy. One of the wills was dated 22 Aug 1726 but alterations and revocations were made on later dates. George Eskridge shows up as a consultant to the Carter Boys in the King's will.

Note: A birthdate of 1684 seems rather late for the birth of Elizabeth (Landon) Willis, it is more likely 1664 or 1674. She is the widow of Richard Willis and may have Willis children by her first marriage. However, Richard Willis (and likely) a wife were transported to VA Colony and John Hallowes received land credit by 1650. Perhaps, Elizabeth Landon represents a much younger wife for Richard Willis, or the wife of a son named Richard Willis.

On 30 Jan 1650 John Hallowes, Gentleman, received 600 acres in Northumberland Co, VA on the south side of the Potamac River and the east side of Hallows Creek, against a point called the ³Wading Place.² This 600 acres was for the transport of 12 people which included the families of John Thomlinson and Richard Willis. While the assumption would be that four of the people are two couples, the remaining 8 persons could be either children or servants, including younger siblings.

Notes for WILLIAM NELSON:

Jodie (Lowe) Hollifield's Genealogy posted on worldconnect@rootsweb.com (Jodie (Lowe) Holliefield <Jodie104@Juno.com>) contains "Pres" as an apparent nickname for Wm Nelson, but I suspect this may not have been a contemporary nickname. Rather, it may be a way some genealogist has used to distinguish him, and may refer to an office that he held in the colonial government of VA. GCR's Carter Genealogy is in agreement with Jodie. [MR, 1935--] [Probably Pres. of the VA Council of State. MR, 2002.]

Indeed, Maude H. Woodfin's article on William Nelson in the Dictionary of American Biography indicates that "he served as president of [that] council and hence was generally known as President Nelson. MR, 2004.]

In GCR's Carter Genealogy he is listed simply as Robert Burwell of Isle of Wight Co.; his wife's name is indicated as unknown using underlining; his children are given, and the fact that the spouse of his dau. was at some time Gov. of VA is noted. Carter, of "Cleves;" secondly, Anne Butler Moore, of "Chelsea;" issue by first marriage eight, and by second fifteen children, whose numerous descendants include the best esteemed family names in Virginia. His daughter, Anne Hill Carter, was the second wife of "Light Horse Harry" Lee, and the mother of General Robert Edward Lee. Colonel Carter was a member of the House of Burgesses continuously from 1761 to 1766, and in the latter year a member of the Council also. He, later, fitted up "Shirley," James River, and moved thither. He died in 1806, leaving an estate of 35,000 acres of land in the counties of Loudoun, Fauquier, Prince William, Lancaster, Richmond, Westmoreland, King William, Hanover, Henrico, and Charles City; about 1000 negro slaves; £12,000 in money, and various bonds, mortgages, etc. In his will he requests his family and friends not to "go into mourning nor wear black clothes." His grave is at "Shirley," which seat is now owned by his grandson, Captain Robert Randolph Carter, late Confederate Navy.--BROCK.]

Notes for MARY W. CARTER:

Gabriel Church Randolph's Carter Genealogy has Mary Walker = Charles Carter of "Cleve," in 1728, and their daughter, Mary W. Carter, 1736-1770= Charles Carter of Shirley, who later = Anne Butler Moore of "Chelsea." Since Jesse Macon Lawrence's genealogy has Mary Walker born c. 1710, married c. 1756, and bearing children 1757-67, which seems implausible, GCR's version seems preferable.
