1856 - 27 Aug 1856, Peoria, IL, married to Emaline Gillet (copy of license, IL statewide marriage index, possible that the marriage license was filed on that date.)

1862 - Served in Civil War. Private, Company C, 86th Illinois Infantry. Mustered in 12 Aug 1862, Chillicothe, Illinois.

1864 - Again, conflicting dates: 15 Oct 1864, Disc. for disability, Jeffersonville, IND. 15 Sept 1864, Disc. at St. Louis. Wounded by accident.

1876 - 2 Nov 1876, Albert Carter named as one of Levi Carter's children in petition made to Court in Peoria, IL, by Nancy Carter, #2 wife of Levi, after his death in Oct of that year. (have copy)

1886 - 22 Nov 1886, married to Dora FLYNN, Memphis, Shelby, TN (have certificate) Name shown as Elbert Sell CARTER.

1900 - 5 Jun 1900, Elbert S.CARTER, living in St. Louis (1900 census, born OH, 1835, 65y, Father born, OH, Mother born OH, meat dealer.

1903 - 14 Nov 1903, returned questionaire to bureau of pensions, gives as residence: Chillicothe, IL; Memphis, TN, Helena, Montana, St. Louis, MO. Children, Margaret Carter and Olefa Carter, 12y and 10y, residing with grandfather, Thos. Flynn in Carlinville, IL (letter from GSA, written 1951 to Mrs. Donald M. Carson)

1909 - 18 Apr 1909, died in insane asylum, St. Louis, MO, senility listed as cause of death, Farmer and Miner listed as occupation. Anatomical Board Cemetery, St Louis, St Louis, MO. The name Anatomical Board refers to the directors of the anatomical donations of a medical school. His body was given to a medical school for study. There was never a burial that we know of.

1999 - A memorial stone was placed for Elbert S. Carter, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO, in 1999.
