Notes for CHARLES CARTER:

Charles Carter enlisted on 7 Feb. 1777 in Essex Co., VA for three years in the Virginia State Troops for service in the Revolutionary War.  He served the 3 years in the 2nd VA State Regt. under Capt. Henry Garnet and Lt. Waller.  Following the war Charles was in Hanover Co., VA.  About 1782 he moved to Chesterfield Co., VA where he lived until moving to Cumberland Co., KY about 1820.

Note:  Charles & Sarah moved to Indiana shortly after son Benjamin was born in 1849.  Charles died in 1861 and in the 1870 census for Boon Twp., Warrick Co., IN Sarah was shown with sons James H. and Benjamin H.   Benjamin had married and he and his wife, Alice, were living with Sarah.  Charles's brother Lemuel age 50 b. James B. Carter was a 2nd Lieutenant in Company E, 65th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War.  He enlisted 12 Aug. 1862 in Evansville, Indiana.  He was 25 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, light complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, a farmer and born in Cumberland County, KY according to his enlistment papers.  He suffered disabling diseases during service and received a pension beginning 4 Oct 1881.  Nancy also received a widow's pension after James died.

 

The 1860 census for Boon Twp., Warrick Co., In showed James B. Carter age 22 b. KY and wife Nancy age 17 with son Robert age 9 months.  Living with them were his mother Fanny age 50 b. KY and James's two brothers Joseph age 17 and John age 19 both born KY.
