Two obituaries on file
from Cambria Triune:
"John Wesley
Carter of Westmont, Dead
Prominent Resident
Expired at Home This Afternoon After Brief Illness Served in the Civil War
John Wesley Carter, a prominent resident of
Westmont, died at his home, Edgehill Drive and Tioga Street, at 1:30 this
afternoon after a few days illness of uremic poisening. Mr. Carter enjoyed excellent health up to
Monday, when he was able to visit the central part of the city. His condition became critical last night.
J.W. Carter was born at Marietta, Lancaster
County, on July 8, 1839 and was a son of John B. and Mary Ann Goodman
Carter. He served in the Military
Railroad Department, First Pioneer Corps, during the Civil War and was
stationed at City Point. Following the
war he returned to Pennsylvania and was located at York until 1872 when he
removed to Johnstown.
John Wesley Carter and Kate Blessing, the
latter of York, were married on February 9, 1860. Mrs. Carter's death occurred here five years ago yesterday. Six
children were born: John and Charles
having passed away some time ago and the surviving children are: Miss Lucretia Carter, at home; James Carter,
of Roxbury, Mass; Frank G. Carter, of the Sixth Ward; and Miss Olive Carter of
Quebec.
John Wesley Carter was one of the oldest
members of the Franklin Street Methodist Episcopal Church and was an active
member of the Vincent Bible Class.
For many years Mr. Carter was employed by the
Camabria Iron Company, but
retired some years ago.
The honorary pallbearers...
The deceased, who was in his 78th year, was
a son of the late John B. Carter.
The latter was born in Lancaster County, this
State in 1812, and died in this city in 1880.
...In February 1872 the Carter family came to Johnstown from Lancaster
County. John Wesley Carter was for 11
years a stamper and steel inspector for the late Alexander Hamilton in the
Cambria mills, going from there to the Gautler plant as weighmaster. He filled this position until the time of
the Johnstown Flood of 1889, when he placed in charge of the Camabria
warehouses as successor to the late J.S. Buchanan, who was among those who
perished in the Flood. Mr. Carter
severed his connection with the Cambria Iron Company 14 years ago.
John W. Carter was one of a family of 6
children; two sons and 4 daughters, and is the fourth of the number to pass
away. The surviving sisters are Mrs.
Sallie Hallowell of Chicago, and Jennie, wife of Robert Rankin of Elyria, Ohio.
Mr. John Wesley Carter
built the first house in Westmont after the Johnstown Flood.

Frank Edgar Carter
changed his middle name to reflect his mother's maiden name. I remember the
conversation about it when I was young.
I don't remember if it was done legally, or just out of preference. From then on, however, Uncle Frank was known
as Frank Griffith Carter. He was my
uncle, brother to my father, Mark Lee Carter.
