Notes for CARY CARTER:
All we know is
that Cary Carter and his two brothers,
Thomas and George W. Carter came from England, and settled in Virginia. No papers has been proven on this fact,
except what Aunt Flora has written about the Carter family.

i. THOMAS JEFFERSON2 CARTER.
ii. GEORGE WASHINGTON CARTER.
2. iii. CARY CARTER, b. 1789, Albemarle Co. Va.
Generation No. 2

in Henry Co. Va.. She was born 1797.

Notes for GRAYSON CARTER:
A letter written back
in June 7, 1956 form Grayson Ky, Dan
was told by his mother that her uncles Grayson and William Carter came from
Virginia to Kentucky and settled here in Grayson and that Grayson and Carter Co. was named for them.
Letter from Nora Lee and Dan Stone
Dear Virginia
We were so disappointed
over not seeing your girls, since we have been there twice and failed to see
you. I feel you and Dallas owe it to us
to come here some week end soon. You
know when Dan came to Grayson 46 years ago their was on old colored man who was
a slave of the Carters from Virginia, and Dan found out a few connections from
him, since his mother had told him that his two Uncles, Grayson and Bill Carter
had come from Va to Ky and settled here, since this all connected up with the
information the Negro man gave Dan-pr? to be that Grayson was named for this
great uncle and Carter Co. the name
also from this family. There is a real
old lady- Miss Heba Carter
who lives in Ashland, quite wealthy and no
direct relatives. You might come down
and go see her
and get quite a bit of
history from her and you might prove to be an heir. Jim Stones, has quite a disire to talk to her, so he will go with
you. I have tired so many times to get
Dan interested in her. He is not
interested in background and history.
This lady is a native of this county and up to a couple of years back ,
her distant relatives lived here. Dan
says he remembers his grandmother Cox and that is all.
Why couldn't Nannie
give out some finformation on this side of the family. If you would drive down here you and Dan
could drive to Nannie in a day from here.
She and her family are quite prosperous from all appearance. They stopped by to see us last year on their
way to the west coast driving a Cadillac.
We had a wonderful trip, drove 300 miles up in Canada. I could have stayed up there forever. The cleanses most beautiful country-flowers,
trees,shrubs were beautiful. We had
planned to stay several days up there so Dan began to worry about getting back
this way. We came through W. Virginia.
We were so disgusted with this drive. Nothing to see and roads are
terrible. Accommodations very poor. We
found your home without any trouble, and I like it and the surroundings are
beautiful. We have a new home 2 years
old and it takes forever to get flowers and trees, started and at our age we
are not get to see them mature .Please come before Dan gets much older. You will
enjoy him................etc

Notes for BETTIE CARTER:
Bettie Carter and
Moses where first Cousins. Her father
was Thomas who lived in Henry Co. Va.
They tried to hide
this fact for many years. Bettie even used the name Brogan, which we don't know
where that came from. Jamie Woods
Beecham told this story.
On how they meet , one
story goes like this: After the war,
the brothers settled their differences. All of Cary's family fought for the
South and he fought for the North. So
Thomas decided to come for a 2 week visit, During the two weeks, Bettie and
Moses decided to marry and they did. This was told by Robin Choate, who said
that Aunt Betty and her Mother Myrtle told this story.
Another verison I
heard was that Cary went and visited and got sick and Bettie took him back home
to Kentucky, and she meet Moses and she never left to go back home.
It also goes that he
went to Virginia right after the war, went blind and Bettie took him home. With her being born in 1868, we know that
this story couldn't be true.

Marriage Notes for MOSES CARTER and BETTIE CARTER:
Died of a stroke;
Before her death,
Bettie Carter, by faith in God had stated many times that when she died a Dove
would come to take her spirit home.
When she was dying, a crowd was gathered, and as she took her final
breath a Dove sat and cooed on the open window sill.
The fact is why Bettie
Carter's tombstone was purchased with a dove on it.
Moses and Betty
operated a store and Moses was the
Post-Master for the community. The name
of the post office was "Iona".
In later years the post office was in the front left room of the home of
Moses and Bettie. Older people of the area who conducted their business with
Bettie all said she was quite, honest, and professional. This house was built by Bert Carter shortly
before his tragic death, with money earned while in the navy. The house is owed
by Jackie Templin Benz
Info: by Barry Adams

1887, Laurel Co. Kentucky; d. 20 May 1971, Laurel Co. Kentucky; m. (1) MARY MOORE; m. (2) NORA CORNELIUS, 26 May
1907; b. 09 Mar 1887, Laurel Co. Kentucky; d. 13 May 1936, Laurel Co. Kentucky.
Notes for WILLIAM HARRY CARTER:
Another story about
Pappy was that he come home drunk one time and started to pick on Nora his
wife. She was so mad, that he took a
hoe to him and beat the living _____out of him. The story also goes, that she was out hoeing when he came home
and he snuck up behind her, taking a stick and rubbing it on her leg like it
was a snake crawling up her leg. She screamed, and took her hoe and beat him
over the head with it.
Note* There are rumors about another Carter child
that was born in Hamilton Ohio. Pappy
stayed up here and worked. Bertha told
mom that when she lived on Albany St. in a half double that he was messing
around with the woman next door. Pappy
also stayed with Betty in Hamilton.

Notes for BERT CARTER:
Death was result of an
auto accident. His mother Bettie, had
stated may times that a Dove came to her shortly before word of his death.
Bert was suppose to be
one of the meanest people around. A
story that pappy would tell was that one day Bert tied a rope around a tree and
strung it across the road, waiting for someone to come across. A man and his mule was coming up the road,
and when they got to the rope he pulled it tripping the mule and the riding.
