Nathaniel Carter

The earliest  Carter ancestor about which I have information is Nathaniel Carter, died 1757, Burlington County, New Jersey. This Carter family lived in southern New Jersey until at least 1819. They were Quakers. If you have Carter ancestors from southern New Jersey who were Quakers, I’d be eager to hear from you. There’s more research to be done.

After 1819, the Carter branch from which I am descended and about which I have extensive information, lived in Belmont County, Ohio. If your Carter family has Belmont County, Ohio, connections, it’s likely we’re related. But there was another large Carter family in the same county at the same time which was apparently not related.

Nathaniel Carter, weaver

Date and place of birth unknown

Died 16 Feb 1757, Springfield, Burlington Co, NJ

Married Nov 1744, Chesterfield Monthly Meeting, Burlington (now Mercer) Co, NJ

Wife: Mary Morris

Date and place of birth unknown

Died after 1757

Nathaniel and his wife were Quakers. Their marriage is recorded in Chesterfield Monthly Meeting, but the actual marriage certificate, which might give the names of their fathers, has not been found. Nathaniel and Mary Carter may have had several children, but I have a record of only one:

Benjamin Carter, son of Nathaniel Carter and Mary Morris

Born between 1750--1757, probably Burlington Co, NJ

Died about 1814, Salem Co, NJ

Married 11 May 1786, Woodbury Twp, Gloucester Co, NJ

Wife: Rebeckah Fluallen, daughter of Abraham Fluallen

Date and place of birth unknown

Date and place of death unknown

By Rebeckah Fluallen, Benjamine had Mary  Carter and Benjamine F. Carter, Jr. Benjamin and his wife were Quakers. Their marriage record from Woodbury Monthly Meeting, Gloucester Co, NJ, gives the names of their fathers (both deceased at the time of the wedding) and includes a list of the wedding guests. Note: the name “Fluallen” is probably a corrupt spelling of the Welsh name, “Llewellyn”.

Benjamin Carter may have been married previously and had the following children:

William Carter

Ann Carter

Sarah Carter

John Carter

Elizabeth Carter

Keziah Carter

I have no additional information about this possible first family or the name of the first wife.

Benjamin F. Carter, Jr., son of Benjamin Carter and Rebeckah Fluallen

Born about Mar 1793, Gloucester Co, NJ

Died 7 Jan 1865, Belmont Co, OH

Married about Jul 1816, Salem Co, NJ

Wife: Mary, last name unknown

Born about 14 Feb 1794, NJ

Died 7 Jan 1865, Belmont Co, OH

Benjamin F. Carter, Jr., and Mary migrated  about 1819 from Salem Co, NJ, to Belmont Co, OH. Their children were:

Jeremiah Powell Carter, born  about 17 Sep 1817, Salem Co, NJ

Ephraim Thomas Carter, born about 1819, Belmont Co, OH

Mary Carter, born Jan 1821, Belmont Co, OH

William Carter, born about 21 Nov 1824, Belmont Co, OH

Elizabeth Carter, born about 1827, Belmont Co, OH

Rebecca Carter, born about 10 Jan 1830, Belmont Co, OH

Wyatt Carter, born about 1 Jan 1832, Belmont Co, OH

Fluallen Carter, born Aug 1833, Belmont Co, OH

Harriet Carter, born about 28 Dec 1834, Belmont Co, OH

Sarah Ruth Carter, born about 1 Jan 1838, Belmont Co, OH; died young

Thomas B. Carter, born  before Jan 1840, Belmont Co, OH; died young

I have extensive information about the Carter family in Belmont Co, OH, which I’m more than willing to share with other possible descendants of  Benjamine F. Carter, Jr., and Mary. Let me know if you can read a GEDCOM file, or if you want the information in the form of a Family Tree Maker file..
