JOSEPH C. CARTER

PVT CO E 17th LA INFANTRY C.S.A.

Joseph Columbus Carter was born in Clark County, Alabama on Feb. 8, 1822. His parents were George W. and Ruth Carter. George Washington Carter was born in Maryland in 1780. His wife Ruth was born in North Carolina. In George's lifetime he migrated from Maryland to North Carolina to Georgia, to Clark County , Alabama.

Then in his old age moved on to Ouachita Parish, Louisiana before 1850. His sons James and Joseph and their families all came to La. together. Joe lived in Ouachita Parish with his first wife,  Mary Leonard and their two children, Millard and Sarah Jane.

Many of the descendents believe that Mary was a full-blooded Indian.

Joseph C. enlisted in the Confederate Army in Sept 1861 at Camp Moore at the age of thirty-eight, twice the age of most men going to war. He served under Capt. Madison Rogers and Col. S.S. Heard. He was described as being 5 feet 7 inches tall, light complexion, blue eyes, dark hair and by reputation a farmer. Joe was not wounded in service, but released before the end of the war on a sick furlough May 12, 1862, serving less than one year.

He was paid $8.00 traveling allowance from Vicksburg, Mississippi to Monroe, La. (80 miles at 10 cents per mile ). He also received $25 for clothing; his total severance pay totaling $37. 40. He was home in Ouachita Parish at the end of the war.

One year after the Civil War's end, on June 14,1866 Joe Carter married Mary Ellen Griffin, age 18, who was quite a catch for an old man of 44.

Mary Ellen could read and write and taught school for awhile. He and Mary had twelve children, six who lived to adulthood. The other six were buried in a row at the entrance of Carter Cemetery.

Joe and Mary Carter lived in Ward 5 in Union Parish and raised their children here. Joe said he was away only one year in 1875, spending that year in Arkansas. In the 1900 census Joseph ' s family was living between G .Marion Carter and John Carter, with his daughter Lula and children living next door. Joe died here March 11, 1909. He had walked a long distance to attend another Carter's funeral and collapsed on the way back home. Joseph Columbus Carter lived 87 years. In that time he worked hard as a farmer, raised a large family, and freely served his county as he volunteered immediately, despite being twice the age of most recruits. We honor his memory today! November 06,2004
