Success Stories

The Carter project was first discussed in 2003 with various Carter researchers. Believing that DNA testing could be a tool for genealogists, six brave participants agreed to submit their DNA. Promptly, we were banned from the Carter mailing list at www.rootsweb.com, told by one lister that the only acceptable source records were courthouse records, and that DNA would never take the place of traditional research. Almost five years later over 200 Carter men have submitted their DNA, found new cousins, and have proven relationships when the paper records were not available.

Group 1, Haplogroup I's Success Story:

We have proven through DNA research that Levi Carter Sr. and John Carter Sr. were brothers (Both were born in the mid-1700’s in NJ and died in the early 1800’s in Greene Co. TN) We are seeking to match DNA from their descendants as well as from descendants of Richard Carter, who died in Greene Co. TN ca 1811 and Caleb Carter who died in Champaign Co., OH in 1828. Richard Carter and Caleb Carter are thought to be brothers of John and Levi Carter. There could be others.

John Carter Sr. born 1730 had three sons who received Revolutionary War Pensions. All were born in the 1750s and 1760 in Morristown NJ. Samples are wanted from descendants of the following sons of John Carter Sr.

Abraham- md Rebecca Edmonds Bennett

John Jr. – md Elizabeth_____________

Jacob – md Charity

Daniel- md (1) Rebecca Gideon (2) Ann Jones (3) Sarah Weems

James – md Phoebe Ballard

David – md Anne Jones

Ephraim- md ___________?

Samples are wanted from descendants of the following sons of Levi Carter Sr.

Caleb md (1 Phebe Williams (2) Rachel Templeton

Jesse – md Besty Jones

Group 7, Haplogroup R1b's Success Story:

When I volunteered to be the administrator of this project I thought that, in no time, I would solve the riddle of who my Great-Great-Grandfather, Richard Carter, was descended from. All I needed was for my father's DNA to match another Carter, find a Richard in his tree and there he would be. Didn't happen but I have been patient. About 2 years later we finally matched another Carter. Problem was they didn't know much about their ancestor either. We did know that their ancestor was probably born somewhere in Virginia due to census and death records and I could find a Richard Carter, born in Viriginia, living in close proximity to the mother of my Great-Grandfather.

Two and half more years pass and I receive a call from a man who descends from Francis Carter of Fauquier County, VA. I knew my suspected Richard came from that county also. Finally, a chance at a match with a proven genealogy. But it didn't happen. He did not match us. It made me rethink my research, and decide to accept the fact that the Richard I had been chasing for so long was not mine. But Francis' descendant felt certain that Richard's grandfather, Isaac, was his Francis' brother, and, luckily, wouldn't stop. He contacted a Carter researcher who is very knowledgable about the different Carter families in Fauquier County. She descends from Isaac and we had her uncle tested. This man did not match the descendant of Francis but he did match my father.

Although, on paper, I still can not prove Richard Carter from Fauquier County, VA is my ancestor I know that I am on the correct track and will continue searching for records. We would love to have more descendants of Isaac Carter tested. He was born about 1775, and lived in Fauquier County, VA from about 1800 - 1850. Sons included Henry, James & Ezekiel and maybe others. Descendants went to Baltimore and Montgomery County, MD in the late 1860's.
