Tallent---Thomas Henry Tallent was born Oct. 14, 1847,  and departed this life May 6, 1940, after several months' illness. His companion,  and three children, preceded him to the grave several years ago.    He is survived by eight children---five daughters, Mrs. G.G. Webb, Mrs. T.N. Webb,  Mrs. Mack White, Mrs. A.D. Webb and Mrs. H.L. Sloan; three sons, Ollie, Arthur  and Lynn; 54 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.    Funeral services were held at Hopewell Springs Church, of which he was a member,  Rev. J.E. Vaughn and Rev. Newt Patterson officiating. Pallbearers were grandsons:  Morris Sloan, Ray Tallent, Henry Webb, Troy Webb, Reed Tallent and Kenneth White.  His granddaughters were flower girls.    He was laid to rest to await the resurrection under a beautiful mound of flowers in the  Hopewell Church Cemetery.    "Life is real! Life is earnest!  And the grave is not its goal;   Dust thou art, to dust returnest'  Was not spoken of the soul."    Sorrow not, dear loved ones, as those who have no hope. He had too many friends  and loved ones gone on before him to linger longer with us. His suffering is all over;  his victory has been won. Think not of him as dead, but as living where happiness   has just begun. Soldier's Application for Pension.

I, L J Tallent, a native of the state of Tennessee and now a citizen if Tennessee, resident at Frankewing, in the county of Giles in said state of Tennessee, and who was a soldier from the state of Tennessee in the war between the United States and the Confederate States do hereby apply for aid under the Act of the General Assembly of Tennessee, entitled "An Act for the benefit of the indigent and disabled soldiers of the late war between the States and to fix the fees of attorneys or agents for procuring such pensions and fixing a penalty for the violation of the same." And I do solemnly swear that I was a member of Confederate Army, vollenteered (sic) for 1 year,  Served out 15 months. in the service of the Confederate or United States, and that by reason of disability and indigence I am now entitled to receive the benefit of this Act.  I further swear that I do not hold any National, State or county office, nor do I receive aid or pension from any other State, or from the United States, and that I am not an inmate of any soldier's home, and that I am unable to earn a reasonable support for myself and family.  I do further solemnly swear that the answers given to the following questions are true:

Answer: Baker Creek battle, confederate army retreated to Vicksburg.  was under shell fire 47 day.  and lived on quater (sic) rations until surrender.

What was the nature of your wounds or disability, if any?

Answer:  No wounds, only loss of flesh caused from starvation, also had side plurcey (sic).

Were you incapacitated for service by reason of said wound or disability incurred?

Answer:  was weak from starvation and blister caused from Drs treatment.

Were you discharged from the army by reason of said wound or disability?

Answer: It has been so long since I lost my parole I don't remember how it read.

If discharged from the army, where were you and what did you do until the close of the war?

Answer:  was at Vicksburg.  made my way home, worked where able until close of war.

What was the name of the surgeon who attended you?

Answer:  I was treated for side plursy by Dr Thomas.

28.  THOMAS RUSSELL⁷ TALLENT (JAMES ELISHA⁶, JAMES ELISHA⁵, WILLIAM⁴, LOT³, THOMAS², TALLENT¹) was born 28 Mar 1846 in TN, and died 21 Apr 1893 in Monroe County, TN (Source: Newspaper Account of Murder, Atlanta Journal, 22 April 1893, A Cold-Blooded Murder  A Prominent Tennessee Farmer Killed and His Brother-In-Law is Arrested.  Knoxville, Tenn., April 21 - (Special)- A telegram received at midnight tonight tells of the murder of Thomas Tallent, in Monroe county, last night. He was sitting in his room reading about 8 o'clock when someone fired through a window. The shot took effect in his head, killing him instantly.  The coroner's jury today held Q B Stopp guilty, and he was arrested and is now in jail.  He is the brother-in-law of the dead man.  The murder is supposed to be the sequel of trouble between Stopp and his wife. She left her husband's home  February 20th and went to her brother's house, where she has since resided and was present when the killing occured. She asked for alimony some weeks since and divorce from bed and board.  They were married about thirteen years ago. The woman alleges that her health was broken some three years ago when her husband had her sent to the insane asylum at Knoxville. She alleges that her husband in the meantime took one Bettie Moss to his hous and lived in adultry with her, and that a child had been born to them. She alleges that she had been cruelly treated and beaten after her return home and compelled her to sleep in a room where the rain fell and wet the bed.  The proof is said to be positive as to the murder. Tallent, 74, of Iowa, died of cancer Thursday, May 22, 2003, at his home, while surrounded by his family.     Born May 28, 1928, in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of Othar and Agnes Tallent, both now deceased.     He spent most of his childhood in Tennessee and graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1946. He received a bachelor of science degree and a master's degree from the University of Tennessee. He earned his doctorate from the University of Illinois, where, on his way to a dance, he met Joy Redfield, a graduate student just leaving the dance. She was persuaded to stay for the rest of the dance and ultimately to marry Mr. Tallent in Beloit, Wis. on August 23, 1952.     Upon graduation he worked at the National Institutes of Health in the National Heart Institute for three years. He then worked as a research chemist with G.D. Searle in Skokie, Ill., until joining the Department of Agriculture. At the Department of Agriculture he served in several positions at the Northern Regional Research Center in Peoria, Ill., before becoming director.     In 1983, he was transferred to Washington, D.C., where he served as deputy administrator for the Agricultural Research Service, Northeastern Region, and then as the first director of the Office of Technology Transfer, where he worked with the "1890" colleges.     Mr. Tallent was the recipient of numerous awards, including the 1981 Distinguished Economic Botanist Award, a 1988 Presidential Rank Award, and a 1992 NASA Technology Award for Lifetime Achievement in Technology Transfer. In 1993, he was a member of the 1890 Capacity Building Grants Team that received USDA Distinguished Service and Reinventing Government Award.     He belonged to several professional organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, the Society for Economic Botany, and the American Oil Chemists Society.
