Tallent---Thomas Henry Tallent was born Oct. 14, 1847, and departed this life May 6, 1940, after
several months' illness. His companion,
and three children, preceded him to the grave several years ago. He is survived by eight children---five
daughters, Mrs. G.G. Webb, Mrs. T.N. Webb,
Mrs. Mack White, Mrs. A.D. Webb and Mrs. H.L. Sloan; three sons, Ollie,
Arthur and Lynn; 54 grandchildren and
many great grandchildren. Funeral
services were held at Hopewell Springs Church, of which he was a member, Rev. J.E. Vaughn and Rev. Newt Patterson
officiating. Pallbearers were grandsons:
Morris Sloan, Ray Tallent, Henry Webb, Troy Webb, Reed Tallent and
Kenneth White. His granddaughters were
flower girls. He was laid to rest to
await the resurrection under a beautiful mound of flowers in the Hopewell Church Cemetery. "Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou art, to dust returnest' Was not spoken of the soul." Sorrow not, dear loved ones, as those who
have no hope. He had too many friends
and loved ones gone on before him to linger longer with us. His
suffering is all over; his victory has
been won. Think not of him as dead, but as living where happiness has just begun. Father is gone, and Mother
too. "So live that when thy
summons comes To join that innumerable
throng Which moves to that mysterious
realm" That Christ shall settle

Soldier's Application
for Pension.
I, L J Tallent, a
native of the state of Tennessee and now a citizen if Tennessee, resident at
Frankewing, in the county of Giles in said state of Tennessee, and who was a
soldier from the state of Tennessee in the war between the United States and
the Confederate States do hereby apply for aid under the Act of the General
Assembly of Tennessee, entitled "An Act for the benefit of the indigent
and disabled soldiers of the late war between the States and to fix the fees of
attorneys or agents for procuring such pensions and fixing a penalty for the
violation of the same." And I do solemnly swear that I was a member of Confederate
Army, vollenteered (sic) for 1 year,
Served out 15 months. in the service of the Confederate or United
States, and that by reason of disability and indigence I am now entitled to
receive the benefit of this Act. I
further swear that I do not hold any National, State or county office, nor do I
receive aid or pension from any other State, or from the United States, and
that I am not an inmate of any soldier's home, and that I am unable to earn a
reasonable support for myself and family.

some by the day. income as a whole was

Daily Post, 2 February 1934, CONFEDERATE VET GETS LAST CALL AT RICEVILLE HOME J L Tallent, 89, Confederate veteran,
answered the final roll call Wednesday at his home in Riceville. The summons came about 12 o;clock. The deceased answered to the call of his
country during the first months of the Civil War. After peace was declared he returned tohis home in McMinn county
and continued his vocation as a farmer, which he had followed during his early
boyhood days. Mr Tallent was one of the
few survivors in the fast thinning ranks in McMinn county. Several years ago he became too feeble to
carry on farm work and moved to Riceville.
He was married early in life and is survived by his widow, who was his
mate for 65 years. Also surviving are:
six sons, James Tallent of Texas, John of Georgia, Charles of Virginia and Will
and Henry of Pulaski and Robert of Riceville, and two daughters, Mrs Lena
Blackburn of Texas, Miss Fannie Tallent of Chattanooga. Funeral services were held from his
residence in Riceville this morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev W I Farmer,
pastor of the M E Church, South.
Interment followed in the Eastanallee cemetery, south-east of

Tenn., April 21 - (Special)- A telegram received at midnight tonight tells of
the murder of Thomas Tallent, in Monroe county, last night. He was sitting in
his room reading about 8 o'clock when someone fired through a window. The shot
took effect in his head, killing him instantly. The coroner's jury today held Q B Stopp guilty, and he was
arrested and is now in jail. He is the
brother-in-law of the dead man. The
murder is supposed to be the sequel of trouble between Stopp and his wife. She
left her husband's home February 20th
and went to her brother's house, where she has since resided and was present
when the killing occured. She asked for alimony some weeks since and divorce
from bed and board. They were married
about thirteen years ago. The woman alleges that her health was broken some
three years ago when her husband had her sent to the insane asylum at
Knoxville. She alleges that her husband in the meantime took one Bettie Moss to
his hous and lived in adultry with her, and that a child had been born to them.
She alleges that she had been cruelly treated and beaten after her return home
and compelled her to sleep in a room where the rain fell and wet the bed. The proof is said to be positive as to the
murder. All parties belong to prominent families of leading farmers. .).

Wilson of Ocoee; Mrs. Clyde Stephens
of Benton; Mrs. Annie Webb of Englewood; Mrs. Emma McConkey of Madisonville; Elige Tallent of Hamilton,
Montana; and J.C. Tallent of the Army,
Corzal, Canal Zone. All of the children were present except two, J.C. and Elige. Jasper C. Tallent has 65
grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren
and a great host of friends and relatives who mourn his loss. He will be
greatly missed by his family and the
community in which he lived. The pallbearers
were the following: W.O. Brakebill, Starling Watson, N.M. McDaniel, John Wilburn, Amos Wilson and
Walter Vineyard."

"Anderson Russell Tallent, 85, died last Tuesday at the home of a
daughter, Mrs. Annie Witt, at
Hendersonville, N.C. He was a native of Monroe County, but settled in upper East Tennessee after
his marriage to Kitty Jones in the early
1890's. Services were held last Thursday afternoon in Hendersonville at
the Memorial Chapel by Rev. Thomas
Shepherd, who accompanied the body to
Monroe County. Final services were held Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock at
the graveside, Corntassel Cemetery,
Rev. McCoy Franklin officiating. Survivors
include three sons, Royston of Paducah, Ky.; Ancil of Houston, Tex.;
and Jones of Langley, Ky.; five
daughters, Mrs. Grover Kidwell of Cleveland,

William H. Tallent, 74, of Iowa, died of cancer Thursday, May 22, 2003,
at his home, while surrounded by his family. Born May 28, 1928, in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of Othar and
Agnes Tallent, both now deceased. He
spent most of his childhood in Tennessee and graduated from Oak Ridge High
School in 1946. He received a bachelor of science degree and a master's degree
from the University of Tennessee. He earned his doctorate from the University
of Illinois, where, on his way to a dance, he met Joy Redfield, a graduate
student just leaving the dance. She was persuaded to stay for the rest of the
dance and ultimately to marry Mr. Tallent in Beloit, Wis. on August 23,
1952. Upon graduation he worked at
the National Institutes of Health in the National Heart Institute for three
years. He then worked as a research chemist with G.D. Searle in Skokie, Ill.,
until joining the Department of Agriculture. At the Department of Agriculture
he served in several positions at the Northern Regional Research Center in
Peoria, Ill., before becoming director.
In 1983, he was transferred to Washington, D.C., where he served as
deputy administrator for the Agricultural Research Service, Northeastern
Region, and then as the first director of the Office of Technology Transfer,
where he worked with the "1890" colleges. Mr. Tallent was the recipient of numerous awards, including
the 1981 Distinguished Economic Botanist Award, a 1988 Presidential Rank Award,
and a 1992 NASA Technology Award for Lifetime Achievement in Technology
Transfer. In 1993, he was a member of the 1890 Capacity Building Grants Team
that received USDA Distinguished Service and Reinventing Government Award. He belonged to several professional
organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of
Science, the American Chemical Society, the Society for Economic Botany, and
the American Oil Chemists Society. In 1988, he became editor., (2) Obituary for

Mr. Tallent was active in the United Methodist Church, especially its
church and society programs. His concern for the disadvantaged was a lifelong
focus. The family said he especially loved fishing, bluegrass music, history,

to Iowa City, Iowa to be closer to family.
Mr. Tallent is survived by his wife Joy; a son, Raymond and wife, Paula
Bergstrom, of Marengo, Iowa; two daughters, Cinda and husband, John Allen, of
Iowa City and Elizabeth and partner, Gloria Rogers, of Stanford, Calif.; and by
four grandchildren, Daniel Allen, Maren Allen and Luke Allen of Iowa City and
Gabriel Tallent of California. He is
also survived by two brothers, Kimmer Tallent of Oak Ridge and Robert Tallent
and wife, Candy, of Mount Laurel, N.J.; an aunt, Nellie Holt of Clinton; and by
several nieces and nephews. The
funeral was Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Lensing Funeral Home in lowa City with
the Rev. Paul Akin officiating. He was buried in the new section of Oakland
Columbarium. The family requests

Joseph Tallent, 55, residing on Route 1, Anna, was dead on arrival at Collin
Memorial Hospital here Wednesday night following a head-on car-truck collision
nine miles West on Highway 24.
Harris-Horn Emergency ambulance brought Talent to the hospital. The driver of a third vehicle was Charles
Szad, 54, of Wallinford, Conn., who suffered minor injuriies when the trailer
towed by the Talent car, broke loose and hit Szad's car head-on. Szad was given first aid treatment at the
hospital and released. The truck
driver involved in the wreck was uninjured.
Highway Patrolman Sam Turtle investigated the accident which occured at

established a national reputation through his work with the mentally retarded,
died last week in Tuscon, Ariz, after a long illness. Arnold Talent, who helped many mentally retarded people enter the
mainstream of society after they had run afoul of the law, died Jan 12, with
funeral and burial in the veterans section of Evergreen Cemetery in
Tucson. Mr Talent is survived by his
widow, Merridith Talent of Tucson; a daughter, Mrs. Coriene Hannapel, San
Antonio, Tex, and a son, Jeffrey Tallent of Galveston, Tex. Also four sisters, Mrs Maude Keys, Mrs Grace
Patterson and Mrs Dorothy Bearden, all of Calhoun, amd Mrs Bonnie Reeves, St
Augustine, Fla; and two grandchildren.
Mr Talent, 58, created the first program in the country to provide special
probation supervision to mentally handicapped adult lawbreakers, the Pima
County, (Ariz) Program for Mentally Deficient Probationers. The program started in 1972 and won a
National Association of Counties award in 1977. Mr Tallent retired in 1978 because of illness, and had recently
completed an outline of a book he hoped to write to aid probation supervisors
dealing with mentally handicapped offenders.
Before establishing the Pima County program he had served 21 years in
the U S Air Force, attaining the rack of major. Also, he earned a masters degree in social work from Arizona
State University in 1967, and helped to establish the Arizona Training Center
in Tuscon. During an interview in 1976,
he said the program often meant a lot to the people involved in it-so much so
that one offender asked to have probation extended. "It threw us for a minute." Talent said. "He had a very low IQ. His family had ostracized him We were probably the only friends he
had." Talent said the man was put
on county supervision. Of 86
probationers who had been convicted of about four crimes each before joining
the program, two-thirds kept clean records during the first three years. .).

and Nettie Tallent, passed away on July 2, 2005 in Roseville, California at the
age of 87 years. Otto attended Sequoia High School, San Mateo Junior College
and graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts degree from San Jose State College.
Otto began his long and distinguished career in the Newspaper Industry in 1936,
just 3 days after graduating from high school, having started in the classified
department and working his way up to newspaper reporter and editor, but his
favorite beat was the courthouse duty. In his final years at the newspaper,
Otto oversaw a team of researchers for 10 years on Action Line, a feature that
became one of Redwood City's most popular columns. Even attorney's would advise
their clients to take their troubles to Action Line. Otto's many memberships
included 50 years with the First Baptist Church of Redwood City, where he
served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons, President of the Senior Adults,
Sunday school teacher and even assisted in the church remodel. For 33 years, Otto
served as President and Director of the YMCA in Redwood City and served on the
Board of the San Mateo Juvenile Probation Department. Otto moved to Placer
County in 1980 and continued his 50-year lifetime memberships in both the
Roseville and Rocklin Kiwanis Clubs and the SIRS Club of Roseville. He is
survived by his cherished wife of 61 years, Lila Jean Tallent of Rocklin, CA;
beloved children; son, Lyle Tallent of Sonora, CA; daughter, Cathy Hamilton and
her husband, Scott of Folsom, CA; grandchildren, Chris and Michael Hamilton and
many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Friends and family are invited for
visitation on Thursday, July 7th from 4 - 7 p.m. and funeral services on

TALLENT FOUND DEAD IN PLEASANT GROVE
Nathaniel Tallent, 67,
son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Tallent,
who were pioneer
residents of Etowah, was found dead in bed at his home
in the Pleasant Grove
community one mile east of Etowah at 1 P.M.
Thursday, December 26.
A lifelong resident of
this area, he was a veteran of World War I
and a former employee
of the L&N Railroad.
Tallent, who had lived
alone for several years, was found by his
nephew, Doc Tallent,
and a neighbor, Wade Miller, who resided nearby.
A coroner's inquest
was conducted by McMinn County Sheriff Roy
Buttram and Claude
Cochran in the absence of the McMinn County coroner.
They reported that
Tallent had died of Natural causes.
Funeral services were
held at 3 P.M. Saturday in Pleasant Grove
Church with Rev. Hoyt
Shadden officiating. Internment was in the Pleasant
Grove Cemetery.
Murphy-Long Funeral Home was in charge.
